Float Plan - Let Someone Know Where You're Going...

A float plan is similar to a route card that a hillwalking group would use.  It consists of the Names of everyone on the trip, the route (including Access, Egress and Way Points along the journey), Contact details of the group, and Timings.

To us they have 2 main uses:

- It holds all the key information about the trip in one place.  This is useful as a pre- departure check to ensure you have everything and throughout the journey it contains the route waypoints and so helps navigation.

- A copy should be left with someone who can act as a Point of Contact for the Group.  This person should be able to contact the Emergency Services if the Group is overdue.

You must use it in conjunction with a map with your route marked upon it.  Quite often we take a photo of the completed Float Plan and the map with the marked route and send it to the Point of Contact via text or messenger.  They can always print it off if required and will have a copy on their phone if they need it.

DON’T FORGET TO CHECK IN WITH THE POINT OF CONTACT WHEN YOU’RE OFF THE WATER!

Or you may find you get an angry call from them or worse still a call from the Emergency Services!

Packrafting allows us to move easily between different bodies of water.  This means we can easily spread invasive species. Not only can these nasties threaten our own natives species, but they can lead to flooding and damage to our water supplies.  Help stop the spread!  Download a handy guide and invasive species ID charts here.
