The Safe Working Near Water (SWIW) course is designed for people who work near water but who do not intend to enter the water. Failure to have suitably qualified and experienced staff operating around water has led to accidents and fatalities, leading to HSE prosecutions and significant fines. (See link below).
The typical industry sectors who fall commonly have employees or volunteers working near water are:
- Government Agencies ie. EA, SEPA, NRW personnel.
- Agricultural industries.
- Construction, surveying, road and bridge maintenance sectors.
- Environmental sectors.
- Geo-physical / surveying sectors.
- River trust, management, volunteer sectors.
What the Course will Cover…
This 1-day (6 hour) practical course is designed to ensure you, and your team are fully able to assess the risks associated with working in and around water, establish safe systems of work and deal with incidents should they arise. Key learning areas on the course are:

- Lifejacket maintenance, periodic inspection and transportation
- Lifejacket firing mechanisms
- Lifejacket accidental inflation risks
- Pre- and post-use lifejacket checks
- Lifejacket inflation and deflation – auto/manual
- Swimming and self-rescue in lifejackets
- Throw-bags and other conditional rescues
- Exiting the water
