We provide Water Safety Cover and Advice for companies undertaking work near or in water. Working alongside your team we can help you to understand the risks involved, ensure your staff are equipped and trained and assist you in developing Safe Systems of Work and Rescue Plans that are compliant, and as important, usable.
Working in or near water involves significant risk and failure to design and implement an effective Safe System of Work can be both tragic and costly. Projects in or near water are often complicated and the water related issues are just one facet of the many other complex issues you will need to overcome. Therefore, we recognise the need not to bog you down with needless detail, but to provide you with effective, timely solutions.

Our initial conversations will allow us to understand your project and needs, from here we will undertake a more detailed analysis and provide you a preliminary report to identify any key areas and recommendations. We will always ensure your clearly know what is required, and, as important, the reasons why. Many of our recommendations at this stage won’t necessarily need more from us but will be implementable by your team. Where we recommend further action on our part, we will clearly state costs and timescales, so you know exactly what will be involved.

Case Study
Task: Weir Removal.
Location: River Dee, Erbistock, Nr Chester.
Contractor: S.E. Metcalfe a’i Gwmni Cyf
Summary: Removal of 80 x 4m historic weir from the River Dee to help restore the river to its natural state. Read more about the project HERE.
Challenges: Working with large machinery and plant in fast flowing, deep water and on top of the weir throughout its demolition. The task was further complicated by weather, changing water levels and other environmental factors.
Actions:
Initial scoping study to identify recommendations.
Project risk analysis and assessments to inform Tender application, including:
• Training needs analysis.
• PPE requirements.
• Designing Safe System of Work and Rescue Plan.
Certified training of S.E. Metcalfe a’i Gwmni Staff, including:
• Training in PPE use and maintenance.
• Self and team member rescue.
• Hydrology and Risk Assessment.
• In vehicle working considerations.
• Onsite task analysis, training and scenarios.
• Establishing ‘Go’ and ‘No Go’ criteria.
• Emergency procedures familiarisation.
Water Safety and Rescue Cover:
• Working alongside other third-party contractors to ensure effective water safety and rescue cover was in place throughout the 6-week project.
• Continued water safety related advice and support throughout the project.

Case Study
Task: Tree Reduction.
Location: Royal Chester Rowing Club, River Dee, Chester
Client: The Royal Chester Rowing Club
Summary: An arboriculture contractor had been employed to reduce an exceptionally large black poplar tree that was leaning over the site and a very busy stretch of the river.
Challenges: Rescue considerations for tree surgeon suspended from a crane over the river. Deconflicting works and extremely busy river, used by multiple rowing clubs, members of the public and other commercial users.
Actions:
• Initial scoping site visit and recommendations in liaison with the arboriculture contractor.
• Full site survey and report.
• Site Specific Risk Assessment and Method Statements including Emergency Response and Rescue Plan.
• Identification of river traffic deconfliction zones, to ensure public safety of other river users.
• On site Water Safety and Rescue Cover.
• Standing watch to ensure river traffic deconfliction.
